Oscar Contenders-Past Lives

The repeated use of wide shots is simply exhausting. As an immigrant living in the States, I find it peculiar that the director portrays a native-born American as superior to an immigrant., who then condescendingly flaunts her righteousness to a peer of her homeland. Lee's acting feels noticeably forced, a stark contrast to her male co-stars. However, the husband's concerns about being unable to understand Lee's world connected to her Korean roots really resonated with me. I can be tens of thousands of miles away from my birth country, but my roots are there. A familiar song, clips of a show from childhood, or even pictures of a dish my grandma used to make, instantly transport me back to my origins.
